The Newell Family Mourning Picture- Price Upon Request
The Newell family mourning picture, Worcester, Mass., circa 1831, measuring 17¼ inches by 20¾ inches framed. This watercolor on paper depicts Patience Arnold Newell and her daughter leaning on a tombstone mourning the death of her husband Ezbon Newell and her son John Taft Newell. Stylized trees, a large white church and their home appear in the distance. The name Patience is inscribed on her handkerchief. Patience was born in 1792 and married Ezbon C. Nowell in 1826. Four other known examples of mourning pictures are similarly executed, whose subjects are all from Worcester. One is signed C. Lawton.
