ASHEVILLE, N.C. — A collection of American furniture, paintings and decorative arts, from Iris Court, the Moultrie, Ga., Greek Revival mansion that is considered a masterwork of architect Edward Vason Jones, crossed the block at Brunk Auctions on May 28; it was followed by a sale of British & Continental fine and decorative arts on May 29 and, on May 30, American & Southern works of art and objects. Soaring to $393,600, including buyer’s premium, from a $40/60,000 estimate was a pair of Classical giltwood looking glasses from Iris Court, described in the catalog as rare and exceptional, that were made in Boston around 1820. Extensively published and documented to both gallery and museum exhibitions, the pair were won by a private collector in the room, who beat out competition from the phones. An upcoming issue will feature more highlights from all three auctions.
