DANIA BEACH, FLA. — Kodner Galleries’ October 8 auction featured an important and rare concert quality circa 1737 Antonio Stradivari violin. Made in Cremona, Italy, “The McKay” bore its original paper label that read “Antonius Stradivarius faciebat Cremonensis Anno 1737.”
This fine, late example of Stadivarius’ work had fine grain bookend matched alpine spruce front, flame maple back, ribs and neck but also retained its original cochineal red and brown varnish unique to the workshop of Stadivarius. Above all else, the sound was described as a complex sound that is simultaneously powerful and sweet, brilliant and warm with exceptional clarity and projection.
Bidding was limited to pre-registered phone and house absentee only for this unique offering and was hammered down by Kodner Galleries owner/auctioneer, Russ Kodner on an absentee bid of $2,750,000, including buyer’s premium. For information, 954-925-2550 or www.kodner.com.
