While attendance numbers were not as strong as hoped for, dealers in large booths offered an interesting selection of merchandise at Cord Shows’ second annual Putnam County Antiques Fair on September 20 (during Rosh Hashanah weekend). Buyers who came indoors on a quintessential sunny and crisp autumn day were rewarded with a variety of antiques from smalls to textiles and jewelry.
Cathleen Kissel of Homestead House Antiques, Madison, N.Y., offered childhood items from collectible Christmas, Easter and Halloween decorations to a set of Victorian bowling pins depicting people in professional garb. Kissel asked to have her same booth back next year, as did her neighbor, Barbara Lambert of Weston, Conn., who filled her booth with fine jewelry, vintage textiles and smalls.
Jeff and Catherine Benham from Derby, England, displayed an entire table of interesting English silver and silver plate flatware, as well as English textiles, glass and porcelains. The couple told Vivien Cord after the show that they had been selling nonstop for the entire day.
Diana Higgins of Hampton, Conn., brought a collection of clocks and plenty of country accessories, including tramp art, baskets and stoneware. She also showed a fine quilt and country furniture. Higgins and her partner sold several clocks.
Louise and Dick Baker, Newtown, Conn., plan to return for their third year after having a good show with furniture, china, glass and collectible kitchenalia. Offering vintage clothing and ladies’ accessories, Patricia Frazer (Vintage Couture Jewels), Easton, Conn., and Sheryl and Vic Muzzillo of Prospect, Conn., both had good shows.
Rounding out the offerings was a major collection of Art Deco tables with blue glass tops, as well as a collection of Wallace Nutting photos in the booth of Barbara and John Snyder, Carmel, N.Y., who noted that they enjoyed the show.
Touting the venue’s central location and that “the space has everything going for it,” Vivien Cord and Ed McClure hope to develop this fair further. The 2010 date will be September 19, which Cord noted does not fall on a holiday.
The next Cord show will be December 20 at the Greenwich Civic Center. The Antique Stocking Stuffers Show and Sale features jewelry, silver and general smalls no larger than 6 by 6 inches. It has a loyal following of dealers and customers alike and generally sells out of dealer space early.
