The New London Police Department is investigating the theft of five paintings from a private residence. Although the owner only recently discovered that the paintings were missing, he believes they may have been stolen in July 2009 by a groundskeeper doing some work inside the house.
The paintings that were reported stolen are a seascape with rocks and waves, oil on paper laid down on canvas, 6¾ by 12½ inches, signed Henry Cady; a seascape of a rocky shoreline, possibly Monhegan Island, pastel on paper, 14¼ by 19½ inches, signed Huntsman; and a primitive portrait, circa 1850 of a boy with a book, oil on canvas laid down on board, 23¾ by 19¾ inches. The subject is identified on the back as Charles Ogden, and the artist has been authenticated to be David Gilmour Blythe.
Also reported missing are a snowy Impressionist cityscape, oil on panel, 14½ by 23 inches, signed Burghardt Rezso, 1923; and a painting of a male saint, Italian, second half of the Sixteenth Century, oil on canvas, dimensions unknown.
