A variety of fine art and antiques was offered at Cottone’s September 27 auction. Topping the lots was a fine Frederic Remington 32-inch Bronco Buster bronze from the McClellan family of Geneseo. The bronze, originally purchased directly from Eva Remington, was sold for $660,000.
Fine paintings also fared well, with the top lot being a 30-by-45-inch oil on canvas harbor scene by Jonas Lei titled “In the Path of the Sun,” which realized $132,000. It sold to a phone bidder from Florida.
“Winter’s Wane,” a watercolor gouache by Walter Launt Palmer, sold for $60,500. This painting, along with others, was consigned by the Strong National Museum of Play, Rochester, N.Y., to benefit the collections fund.
Another painting sold by the museum was “First Snow,” a 36-by-40-inch oil on canvas by Emile Gruppe that brought $59,400. An oil on canvas by Cornelius Krieghoff, depicting Caughnawaga Indians in a snowy landscape, brought $47,300, as did a seascape by Anthony Thieme titled “Seagulls and Fisherman.”
Two paintings by Maurice Utrillo were sold to an overseas bidder. One, a 13-by-19-inch gouache winter scene realized $52,800, and an 18-by-22-inch oil on canvas street scene sold for $67,100.
A watercolor by Diego Rivera went for $34,100, while a 23-by-35-inch Charles Burchfield cemetery scene realized $42,900. A pair of paintings on copper by William A. Walker titled “New Orleans” and “Louisiana” brought $37,400, while another 12-by-9-inch Walker oil on board sold for $28,600.
Although fine art highlighted the auction, strong prices were realized in other categories as well. There were some nice examples of Americana: a crisply painted Nineteenth Century blanket chest, decorated with pinwheels and stylized hearts, sold for $40,700, while a white cut to cranberry overlay oil lamp, 29 inches in height, sold to a phone bidder for $17,050.
Several Native American items found new homes: the top lot being a rare Eighteenth Century iron and wood pipe tomahawk, with blade etched on both sides, which sold for $58,300. One of several Hopi Kachina dolls brought $4,840, and a miniature cradleboard with doll sold for $5,280.
A collection of fine jewelry included a Black Starr & Frost vintage platinum and yellow diamond ring, 1.2K, that sold for $22,000, and a vintage 18K gold multi-stone ring that sold for $22,550.
Several Tiffany items were sold, including a Moorish table lamp with Jacob’s ladder base, which sold to an in-house bidder for $35,200; a Tiffany Studios Pomegranate leaded lamp hammered down for $12,100; and a rare Tiffany Studios bronze 12-arm candelabra with blue and green cabochons sold to a New York buyer for $33,000.
More Tiffany included a Tiffany Studios bronze doré picture frame with cabochon jewels, which sold for $5,390, and a signed Tiffany Studios bronze pug humidor/inkwell brought $9,900.
Other decorative items included a Handel reverse painted parrot lamp selling for $14,850. A pair of cast bronze benches with claw feet, eagles and rams heads realized $12,100, and a fine New York pedestal, attributed to Herter, sold to a Midwest phone bidder for $26,400.
All of the prices recorded include a ten percent buyer’s premium.
