We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend Phil Hacking, who passed away on August 26. Known as P. Bill to many, Phil was a staple at our auctions and also worked with us for many years at the tag sales. Leighton Galleries’ relationship with Phil started about 20 years ago. He started out as a consignor and soon became a respected colleague and friend. I remember my sister Ruthi and I pulling major pieces of Roseville out of pickling barrels that Phil had stored in his garage. How can you not love a man like this?!
Phil’s love of antiques goes back many years, evident by the great stories we have heard. Phil was always more than happy to share what he knew about art, antiques and all things good. His passion for the industry never faltered, nor did his zest for life. Phil always had a kind word for everyone, and he was ever exciting to be around.
Phil had recently lost his leg due to diabetes. Although he was doing quite well with his recuperation, he met his demise ironically to an unrelated condition. He was 72 years young. Phil leaves behind his beautiful wife Daria (who many also know from the auctions and sales). Daria and her family, Sasha, Suzana and Angela, were very dedicated to Phil, and remained by his side throughout his ordeals. Angela, who came into Phil’s (Grandpa’s) life as a little girl (now in college) added immense joy to his life, evident by the stories we have heard over the years.
Phil loved kids. At the auction he could hold their attention while parents previewed. They could listen to him forever. I also remember when our grandson Dylan was born nine years ago, Phil showed up at our house in Paramus [N.J.] with a card and $50 for the new baby. I’ll never forget that!
Phil was a true mentor, connoisseur, colleague and friend. One of those true rare breeds that you often run across in the antiques business. He was real, fun-loving and always warm and fuzzy. He was a blessing to us and to our auction. We will miss you, P. Bill!
