Clifford A. Wallach Tramp Art, Folk Art & Americana
John Zadzora, Wall Sculpture- $6,500
Inventory 4691 - A superb tramp art ‘Kissing Doves’ wall sculpture by John Zadzora. This example is one of his most elaborate featuring his signature style incorporating five heart shaped mirrors, two drawers, and a small compartment. Additionally he used some rather unusual embellishments including carved tulips, a star, and multiple pairs of kissing doves. Zadzora’s work is at the pinnacle of all tramp art for his wonderful and expressive creations. John Zadzora was perhaps the finest and most inspired tramp artist to be discovered. Zadzora lived in the Allentown – North Hampton, PA area in the early 1900s. His work was the first example identified as ‘tramp work’ by Francis Lichten in her seminal article written in 1959. She related from an interview with someone whose family had an example that the maker of the pocket spent time in jail. Lichten noted with irony that he made loving objects with hearts although he was in jail for non-support of his wife. We were not able to prove or disprove this story but we were able to identify the artist as John Zadzora and we have included a photo of him in a family photograph. Zadzora was active from 1905 – 1920. Size: 28" high x 15" wide x 5" deep Price: $6500.00
