From April 23 to May 2, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, in recognition of a master class with Odd Nerdrum: The Secrets Behind the Painting, being conducted April 23′5, has arranged for one work by Nerdrum and one work by his mentor Andrew Wyeth to be on view in PAFA’s Historic Landmark Building.
On view is the Nerdrum painting “Horse Bath,” courtesy of the Nerdrum Institute and Forum Gallery, New York, and a small selection of works by Andrew Wyeth, including the tempera, “Young America,” 1950, and three watercolors from PAFA’s permanent collection. An exceptional drybrush on paper from 1947 called “Hoffman’s Slough Study” is on loan from a private collection.
“Odd Nerdrum and Andrew Wyeth shared a friendship and great respect for one another. We are proud to exhibit a major work by Nerdrum in conjunction with his master class so that visitors and students can study his technique up close,” stated Robert Cozzolino, PAFA’s curator of Modern art.
“Although Wyeth is a household name in American art, his work and his legacy are complex and diverse, offering up many more surprises the more we see,” he continued. “That Nerdrum sees him as a towering presence in his life attests to the continuing relevance of Wyeth’s work to younger and future generations of international artists. We hope that the juxtaposition of Wyeth and Nerdrum will bring forth unexpected resonances and reveal the profound impact Wyeth continues to exert on contemporary art.”
