For its spring exhibition, the Neuberger Museum of Art is featuring contemporary works of art in all media from six distinguished metro-New York private collections, including more than 70 important works by emerging and well-known established artists. “Living with Art: Collecting Contemporary in Metro New York” will be on view through August 14. “We focus on the unique perspective of each collector, why they collect and how they live with art,” said Helaine Posner, chief curator of the Neuberger.
“Living with Art” focuses on the collections of Doreen and Gilbert Bassin, Ruth and Jeffrey Libin, The Ginsberg Collection, Rebecca and Martin Eisenberg, Monica and Richard Segal, and another private collection, with each offering insight into the collectors’ personal approaches to acquiring art.
From the Segal collection are works of contemporary realism by Eric Fischl, Richard Prince, Marilyn Minter and Kiki Smith. The Eisenberg collection contains cutting-edge contemporary art with works by Martin Creed, Rikrit Tiravanija and Richard Tuttle. Work by artists Martin Puryear, Roxy Paine and Sean Scully feature in the Ginsberg Collection, while other collections focus on minimalist works and drawings.
Highlights of the exhibition include “Nukae?” by El Anatsui, “Femme Couteau” by Louise Bourgeois, untitled (Gordon’s Made Me Do It) by Rikrit Tiravanija, “Two into One” by Martin Puryear, an untitled drawing by Tara Donovan and “Now” by Kiki Smith.
The museum is planning several events in conjunction with this exhibition. On Wednesday, May 12, at noon, Helaine Posner will give an informal gallery talk. Bring your lunch, or buy one at the museum shop, for her discussion of “Living with Art.”
