NEW HAMBURG, ONTARIO, CANADA — A new world auction record for Maud Lewis (Canadian, 1901-1970) was set in Miller & Miller’s May 14 Canadiana & Decorative Arts auction when “Black Truck,” an atypical work painted late in the artist’s career, sold for $320,031, more than ten times its high estimate. The artist, who is often called “Canada’s Grandma Moses,” was represented in the sale with just three lots but all outperformed expectations and achieved the top three prices seen in the sale. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium and have been converted into US dollars. A more thorough recap will appear in a future issue.
