Marine and China Trade Items Sail Away to $4.8 Million in Portsmouth
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – Under a tent in Portsmouth, Northeast Auctions sailed away with receipts of $4.8 million at its annual Marine and China Trade auction on August 18 and 19. Aggressive bidding by collectors on China Trade views such as these were the norm.
The pair, depicting the hongs at Canton and Hong Kong, sold to a phone bidder for $129,000 including premium. They descended in the family of Captain Samuel Walton Pike of Newburyport, Mass.
Other sale highlights included two Japanese cloisonné porcelain plaques by Namikawa Sosuke (1847-1910), $112,500 and $74,000; two large Japanese models carved by Hannenuma for Deakin Brothers of Yokohama, $63,000 and $31,625; and a pair of Crowell ducks, 8 and a half inches tall, $36,800.
