PHILADELPHIA – From July 19 to 21, Kamelot Auctions conducted a marathon sale, offering 769 lots over the three-day period. The auctions were divided into Luxury Goods: Jewelry & Handbags, Mod Interiors: Chic, Bamboo & Rattan and Estate Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts. Each sale was a strong representation of its category, with the majority of their respective top lots selling over estimate.
The Luxury Goods sale on July 19 was dominated by contemporary designer Marco Bicego jewelry, each piece from the estate of “a fine Montgomery County, Penn., lady.” From Trissino, in the Veneto region of northern Italy, Bicego learned the art of jewelry making from his goldsmith father and never formally trained to be a jewelry designer. Nevertheless, his understated accoutrements, crafted with the finest materials, are a sensation. The top lot of the sale was his Siviglia 18K gold and multicolored sapphire necklace, which sold for $2,250.
Midcentury Modern was in full swing during July 20’s Mod Interiors sale, with all the furnishings for a groovy but updated summer pad. The top lot were the originals, a set of four rattan armchairs, circa 1950. Often confused with wicker, which is named after its weave, rattan is named after its material which is often a solid climbing palm native to tropical forests in Indonesia, Southeast Asia and the Malay Archipelago. This set sold for $3,750, more than double its high estimate of $800/1,200.
The highest achieving lot came across the block on July 21 in the Estate Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts sale, a Nineteenth Century Meissen covered bowl with an Eighteenth Century lady as its finial. Raised on paw feet with delicate floral handles, the bowl was in good condition and one of only two other porcelain lots offered that day. It sold for seven times its high estimate and closed at $4,250.
