SANTA FE, N.M. — It was all guns blazing at Santa Fe Art Auction over the first weekend of December. Hundreds of classic Western, Santa Fe and Taos School paintings and prints fell under the hammer, and dozens sold in the six figures. One — Frank Tenney Johnson’s “Mountain Meadows” of 1929 — exceeded the million-dollar mark.
From the personal collection of art dealer Gerald Peters and his wife, Kathleen, and formerly belonging to the Huntington Library in California, the canvas made what appears to be a record price at auction, $1.1 million plus premium. We will bring you a complete report on the sale in an upcoming issue of Antiques and The Arts Weekly.
