REHOBOTH, MASS. — Americana Auctions’ May 18 sale will feature about 100 lots of fine antique gadget and figural canes and walking sticks of all types. This is part two of the Bill Dixon collection that was assembled over a 45-year period (around 1,000 canes will be divided into several auctions). Notable canes include a rare Babe Ruth ivory and silver baseball cane that was presented to the famous slugger from the city of Boston. Other antique canes and walking sticks of interest include a memento mori skull cane with concealed sword, tools and sewing kit canes; a 1855 French doctor’s cane with medicine vials; a ukulele cane; a mechanical bulldog bank; human fist canes (one engraved “Capt. J. Dexter of Salem”); ivory and sailor-made bone-handled canes, including motifs of dogs, birds and other animals, lady’s legs, compasses, spyglasses and shark vertebrae; clock canes; canes with sterling and gold handles; a 1916 compass, torches, fraternal pieces, a whistle, a cigar cutter — and the list goes on.
Other notable items from various estates and local homes include European art by Edouard Cortes depicting the Jardin de Tuileries, Emmanuel Damoye, JMW Turner (attributed) and Paul Vernon. Some American artworks of interest are two large Louis Kronberg genre oil paintings, a woodland nude nymph by Louis F. Berneker, a Thomas Dunlay landscape of Williamstown, Mass., and many more. Also, Americana will be offering a set of four Nineteenth Century Chinese genre oil paintings, folk art and primitive works on canvas.
The nautical field is well covered with many sailor-made whalebone items such as a full-size and miniature swift, all-bone rolling pin and mini whirligig sailor, barrel measures, scrimshaw whale teeth, wall racks and various implements. Also offered will be a mini sextant in brass and bone engraved “USS Kearsarge 1863,” two shell valentines, a rare coco de mer bowl, carved whales and plaques, Nantucket baskets and more.
Rounding out the auction are lots of gold jewelry and coins, silver items and flatware of all types. There will be a assemblage of antique Chinese ceramics including Han and Tang dynasty tomb figures, Ming bronze vase, jade items, colored and glazed vases (many signed) as well as other objets de vertu. In addition, furniture, accessories and Oriental rugs of all ages and styles will also cross the block.
The auction will be conducted live at the firm’s gallery, as well as online via LiveAuctioneers and Invaluable.
