PLAINVILLE, CONN. — On May 6 starting at 5:30 pm, Winter Associates will offer at auction consignments from homes in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The sale will include a mix of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century paintings, Asian items, silver, jewelry, Americana, including furniture, Oriental rugs, coins, books and outdoor ornaments and garden trains.
An Emile Gruppe (American, 1896-1978) oil on canvas “Town Landing, Gloucester” depicts the artist’s chosen hometown where he founded the Gloucester School of Painting in 1942 and produced a prolific number of Impressionist-inspired landscapes and marine paintings. Of the same style and from the same consigner is an oil on canvas by Frederick John Mulhaupt (American, 1871-1938) depicting a farm in fall, buildings partially visible between rolling hills and bare trees. Other noted American artists in the sale include Samuel Colman, Arthur Morris Cohen, Linda Nelson Stocks, Walter Nelson Baum, Dorothy Ochtman, Charles Demetropoulos, Edward Brodney and Paul Zimmerman, among others.
“Blue Dog” lovers will be delighted by the 12 original works by George Rodrigue from a private estate, including an original mixed media, nine silkscreens and a lithograph, all signed by the artist.
The iconic dog image was first imagined as the Cajun ghost “Loup-garou,” figured after Rodrigue’s deceased spaniel named Tiffany. The Blue Dog quickly gained steam with the public, and in 1992 the artist reached national fame by becoming an Absolut Vodka artist (one of these examples in the sale), joining ranks with Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Damien Hirst and Annie Leibovitz.
Train lovers who collect garden trains (built on the largest scale, G-scale; 1:32 ratio) will delight in the wide selection of locomotives, train cars, box cars, track and accessories by makers Accucraft, LGB (Lehmann-Gross-Bahn), Bachmann, Pearse and Roadhouse. These unique trains are powered by electric and steam, the largest boasting more than 37 inches in length. Toy trains have been around almost as long as their larger counterparts, popular with railroad enthusiasts and children alike, with many fetching hundreds of dollars at auction and the more rare reaching four figures. Other garden collectables include bronze animal fountain figures in the form of frogs, crab and fish, classical cast iron urns and a marble sculpture.
The sale also includes Asian items, including carved ivory sculptures, Chinese “Luduan” or form censer, Rose Medallion porcelain, gilt lanterns, lacquerware, embroidered robe, pottery, metal sculpture, etc., along with oils on canvas by Chinese artists Quan Yang, Huang Jing, Hu Shipping and Li Wu. Other items of interest include an early Louis Vuitton hatbox, circa 1900, an Eighteenth Century New England highboy, a Nantucket basket attributed to Clinton Mitchell, sterling flatware set “Sir Christopher” by Wallace, 12 Royal Copenhagen “Half Lace” plates, vintage advertising signs, coins, etc.
The gallery is at 21 Cooke Street. The sale is also available on Invaluable and LiveAuctioneers.
