TAMPA BAY, FLA. — Richard Stedman Estate Service will be featuring Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney’s residence of fine and decorative art from the collection of the Whitney Museum founder and great granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt from her landmark Old Westbury, Long Island, N.Y., studio together with selections from the Vanderbilt and Whitney family library and private archive as the first 100 lots of a Saturday, January 20, noon online-only auction together with 15 Florida estates simulcast on LiveAuctioneers and Invaluable.
The third in a biannual series of Vanderbilt auctions that have seen record-breaking amounts for Vanderbilt’s sculpture and a showcase of family ephemera chronicling multiple generations of an American dynasty, this event features two of the studio’s best known items, the Howard Cushing portrait of Gertrude’s daughter Flora ($300/$600,000) and the Bechstein grand piano ($20/40,000) that has graced innumerable soirees. There is also an ensemble lot comprising contents from Gertrude’s Paris bedroom ($200/400,000) including her canopy bed, divan, French wardrobe, balloon porter chair and more. A suite of Flora’s childhood diaries ($10/50,000), includes passages of her expressing remorse at Mr and Mrs Astor perishing on the Titanic, as well as her having a rough crossing of the Atlantic on the Lusitania before it became perhaps the second best-known cruise ship to sink. Flora was engaged to President Theodore Roosevelt’s son Quentin at the time of his death in World War I aerial combat and he is also mentioned in her diaries.
Of significant Quentin interest is Teddy Roosevelt’s Easter loving dedication to him of a Rough Riders book as an infant ($10/30,000).
An ancient stone well head ($5/10,000) with a pictorial frieze that announces the entrance to the studio pool and gardens is on offer, as are two large early terracotta animalier urns ($2/4,000) just off the portico.
The Havemeyer family, founders of Domino Sugar, married into this Vanderbilt branch of Old Westbury and the subsequent 25 lots in the sale are from their Florida descendants, including a pastel portrait of Louis J. Belloni ($1/2,000), who married Kate Havemeyer, daughter of F. C. Havemeyer. Of early baseball interest, Belloni was an 1850’s secretary of the New York Knickerbockers Base Ball Club and was still affiliated with the organization during the Civil War. Among multiple lots of sterling silver flatware and hollowware are several early pieces with H monograms. This is Richard Stedman Estate Services’ second Havemeyer, i.e. Domino Sugar-related sale, as the firm sold the Domino Sugar corporate art collection in conjunction with two New York art appraisers in 1995 from the industrial giant’s Stamford, Conn., headquarters during the AMSTAR period of ownership.
In November the auction house sold the estate of Fame and Flashdance songstress and actress Irene Cara, which helped land items from the estate of 1960s girl group Cameo and Decca recording artist Janyra Jasan for this sale. In between recording with Candy and the Kisses in the 1960s and turning her creative energies towards Abstract Expressionist painting, she had an interior design career with the Manhattan trade showroom of Ralph Lauren Home, the source of numerous often prototype or special order RL branded lighting, pillows, textiles, sterling flatware and wall covering lots in the auction.
