MARION, MASS. — On August 19 and 20 Marion Antique Auctions will offer 800 lots drawn from various local estates, collectors and institutions. This diverse sale has offerings in many collecting categories. The online catalog begins with an assemblage of James Abbott McNeill Whistler etchings coming from a private South Dartmouth collector.
Also offered on the first day is a selection of American and European paintings by J.C. Spencer ”A still-life of apples,” William Lester Stevens “Country landscape with barns,” two unsigned Barbizon school landscapes that were found in an Ocala, Fla., estate and these could be the real sleepers. There will be several George Whitaker landscapes. Whitaker was one of the founders of the Providence Art Club.
Found in a New Bedford funeral home are four monumental works by Clement Nye Swift, a New Bedford artist who studied abroad and worked in Brittany and Paris. His 50-by-78-inch painting titled “Completing the Cargo” was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1880. There is a German painting by Fritz Wagner depicting a Dutch interior with gentlemen carousing at a table. Also, from a South Dartmouth estate comes a colored engraving by John James Audubon depicting the “Great Esquimaux Curlew” on Whatman watermarked paper. Middleboro artist Cephas Thompson is well represented with two portraits of Mr and Mrs John Bourne, circa 1806. Other artists in the sale include John Orne Frost, C.H. Gifford, Charles Sidney Raleigh, Louis Sylvia, Charles Webster Hawthorne, paintings attributed to Zedekiah Belknap and Joseph Whiting Stock.
Some highlights in Americana include a circa 1800 Pennsylvania fraktur, a Nineteenth Century barber pole, carved wooden eagle attributed to John Haley Bellamy, Nineteenth Century folk art horse and rider weathervane. A real gem that surfaced in a Duxbury Mass., estate is an Elnathan Taber tall case clock in an inlaid Roxbury case with stop-fluted quarter columns. This is one of the best examples of a Taber clock to come to the market in many years. Elnathan Taber was from New Bedford but went to work in the Willard workshop in Roxbury.
A West Island Fairhaven estate of a 103-year-old woman yielded many historic treasures related to New Bedford and whaling history, including Nineteenth Century scrimshaw highlighted by a Nineteenth Century busk with heart motif and numerous harpoons and spades. One is signed Braddock D. Hathaway, New Bedford. There is also a harpoon whaling lance signed Ambrose J. Peters, New Bedford. Many of these items were kept in a painted sea chest with sailor-made rope becket handles.
From a Tiverton, R.I., collector comes an Azorean whaleboat model and more scrimshaw. One of the highest value items in the scrimshaw category is a Nineteenth Century sailor-made whalebone ditty box with inlaid whale on cover that was purchased in 1982 at a Richard Bourne Auction. Cased sextants and octants are well represented. There is also a selection of ship and pond models highlighted by a polished bronze model of the Bluenose schooner. A ship’s passport signed by President Ulysses S. Grant for a whaling voyage on the bark John P. West in 1871 is expected to do well. Another piece of whaling ephemera is the logbook for the whaleship Lancer out of New Bedford on a voyage to the Pacific Ocean in 1856. It is well written with numerous hand-drawn illustrations of whales and blackfish.
There is a selection of late Nineteenth Century German Mettlach steins, that were found in a Marston Mills, Mass., estate. Some bronzes in this diverse sale are led by a 14½-inch “Pan of Rohallion,” circa 1890, signed Frederick MacMonnies, and a small bronze by Charles Marion Russell titled “The Last Laugh.”
There are three Pairpoint lamps from the West Island estate with one depicting a Fairhaven harbor scene. Items from the Arts and Crafts Movement are represented by a Gustav Stickley fall-front desk from the estate of the author David McCullough. This is one of many Arts and Crafts pieces in this sale. There is a selection of jewelry in this sale. One of the more important items is a 14K gold diamond 1-carat solitaire diamond ring and an 18K gold hunter case pocket watch signed J. Sewill, Liverpool.
Possibly the most valuable object in this auction is an 18K gold handled footed cup in an Arts and Crafts style marked Marcus & Co., NY. It is in the style of Charles Robert Ashbee and weighs 180.7 dwt. The sterling silver category is highlighted by a circa 1824 Georgian silver coffee pot made in London by William Eaton, and some flatware sets by Tiffany and Royal Crest. A large collection of Victrolas and Edison cylinder players are expected to create some interest.
