Choice consignments of furniture and needlework propelled Sotheby’s Americana Week sales to nearly $10 million on January 25′6. The York Avenue firm prospered with Connecticut furniture assembled by the noted Hartford area scholars Thomas P. and Alice K. Kugelman, whose $1.7 million trove included a sumptuous Connecticut blockfront cherry wood desk and bookcase, sold to New York dealer and auctioneer Leigh Keno on behalf of a client for $1,082,500.

Nine pieces of furniture consigned by the Philadelphia Museum of Art added nearly $1.2 million to the museum’s acquisitions fund and included the session’s cover lot, a paint decorated Mahantongo chest of drawers that went to Connecticut dealer Roberto Freitas for $218,500. Mount Vernon Estate, Museum & Gardens reclaimed a watercolor and ink on paper drawing by Benjamin Latarobe, a family heirloom depicting the Washington family on Mount Vernon’s terrace, for $602,500.
