Arthur J. Connolly, known as AJ to his family and friends, was born September 15, 1932, to Arthur James and Dora Muldoon Connolly in Johannesburg, South Africa. AJ, my best friend and constant companion, died at Naples Community Hospital on March 4.
AJ attended Christian Brothers College in Kimberly, South Africa; Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg, South Africa; and Harvard University, graduating in 1959 with his master’s in business administration with emphasis in accounting and finance.
His career took him to Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Ga., and Tokyo, Japan, and later with the pharmaceutical firm Schering Plough.
After many years, AJ allowed himself to enter the world of his passion, that of antiques, fine old furniture, beautiful porcelain and gleaming brass, silver and the unique oddities of years gone by. His marvelous, much loved home and shop was in Long Beach Island, N.J., in the area of Barnegat Light.
As Arthur J. Connolly Antiques he participated in some 30 shows a year and helped many people get started in the business. It was an absolute delight to so many who visited his shop and learned to love not only the beautiful treasures, but also to love the wonderful, gentle gentleman who resided therein.
AJ’s loving pups and his best friend want him know: We’re dogging your steps and hugging you forever and through eternity.
A service was held at Fuller Funeral Home on Monday, April 11. Please let any memorials go to a charity of your choice. For condolences, www.fullerfuneralhome.com .
