Christie’s ocean liner furnishings and art sale on June 1 totaled $968,880, with 89 percent sold by value and 81 percent sold by lot.
The top lot was a painted cast bonze house flag and name from a lifeboat on the RMS Titanic, which sold for $72,000. Also from one of ill-fated vessel’s lifeboats was a painted cast bronze name board and port sign. It brought $60,000.
A detailed builder’s model of the ocean liner SS Conte Biancamano, 1927, realized $54,000.
Commented Gregg Dietrich, head of the Christie’s ocean liner sale, “We are delighted with these results, especially with the prices achieved for Titanic memorabilia. The interest in the Titanic bronze lifeboat plaques illustrate the continuing allure of this infamous maritime tragedy – and we were happy to see both lots reach or exceed our highest presale expectations. Elsewhere in the sale, posters, ship models and decorative arts performed admirably, and Christie’s is proud to continue its leadership of the ocean liner and Titanic memorabilia market.”
