MIDDLEBOROUGH, MASS. — Gold coins and a rare mechanical bank from the Richard “Dick” Withington collection led the way for John White and his wife, Kathryn Black, of White’s Auctions, at their April 27 auction. The bank (pictured) was in working condition, had been examined under a blacklight and retained its original paint; it sold for $7,930. Multiple lots of gold Krugerrands each sold for $6,710. The auction also included a number of paintings by American painter Francis Davis Millet that came to auction from the estate of Millet’s biographer and a long-time collector of his works; leading the group was Millet’s portrait of a Native American, which realized $6,100. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium; an upcoming issue will explore more auction highlights.
