  • Hard Truths The Art Of Thornton Dial At High Museum Of Art

    One of America⁳ most remarkable contemporary artists, Thornton Dial (b 1928) is a self-taught African American who has drawn inspiration from the rich aesthetic traditions of the black South, forging a major body of astonishingly original art. Incorporating salvaged objects into his work †from children⁳ toys to Barbie dolls, plastic grave flowers to carpet scraps, animal skeletons and pieces of metal †he creates large, symbolically charged assemblages conveying turbulent, animated thoughts about history and issues of our times. Born into poverty in rural Alabama, Dial has lived his entire life in the deep South. His art, informed by decades of struggle as a working-class black man, offers compelling commentary on America⁳ most pervasive social and political challenges. These issues are explored and documented in a splendid exhibition, ⁈ard Truths: The Art of Thornton Dial,†comprising 59 large-scale paintings, drawings and found-object sculptures. Organized by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, it is on view at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Ga., through March 3.

    Crowds filled the Big Red Barn in this tiny village half way between Houston and Austin for the Friday and Saturday show, January 18‱9. With more than 120 exhibitors the event center was filled to its winter capacity with antiques from Texas, New England, Europe and more. There were also collections of art, folk art and even many of the later trends in home décor and style.

    The old saying, ⁉f it ain⁴ broke, don⁴ fix it,†seems apt of the Outsider Art Fair. The long-running fair is a wonderful niche show and has a loyal following. It wasn⁴ broken but even a good show can stand a little tweaking. Under new management this year from Wide Open Arts led by gallerist and veteran fair participant Andrew Edlin, who bought the fair last year from its founding producer, Sanford L. Smith & Associates, the fair moved from midtown to an airy and light-filled building in Chelsea.
