    The Gibbes Museum of Art has received a work of art from Charleston native J. Henry Fair, whose photographs were exhibited at the museum in a solo exhibition in 2011. The photograph, titled ⁂acon, Warsaw, N.C.,†is now a part of the museum⁳ permanent collection and is currently on view in ⁔he Charleston Story†exhibition.

    Coeur d⁁lene⁳ annual July art auction was notable for several choice paintings, but the immediate postsale buzz was for a war shirt worn by Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe that came in second only to Howard Terpning⁳ painting, ⁓cout⁳ Report.†The important war shirt sold Saturday, July 21, for $877,500. The Terpning work brought $$965,250.

    Folk art with a musical twist is on view in ⁁ppalachian Strings: The Instruments, Their Makers, The Music,†through September 9 at the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio, Lancaster, Ohio. Dulcimers, banjos, fiddles, guitars and mandolins from public and private collections attest to the basic human instinct to make music and to make art. Carefully wrought by hand and decorated according to the dictates of art, whimsy or popular taste, the Nineteenth and Twentieth Century instruments were made from all manner of materials and with varying degrees of sophistication. They are reflective of the various cultural influences of their makers and the players. Says exhibition curator Thomas Queen, ’⁁ppalachian Strings†is a celebration of ingenuity and the love of music.†He explains that the course of American music emanates from Appalachian music, and the instruments illustrate that history.
