Throughout 2013, the Hyde Collection is celebrating its 50th year as a public museum with a diverse calendar of exhibitions, events and programs. The Hyde’s permanent collection has more than 3,000 works of fine and decorative arts, and the focus of the golden anniversary programs will be on objects that have entered the museum’s permanent collection since 1963.

From January 27 through April 14, the exhibition “50 at 50: Five Decades of Collecting at The Hyde, 1963′013” will present 50 works of art in the Wood Gallery. Featuring objects acquired by the museum since the death of Charlotte Pruyn Hyde (1867‱963), the exhibition offers an unprecedented opportunity to reflect on the careful deliberation the museum exercises in making acquisitions that enhance the legacy of the collection formed by her and Louis Fiske Hyde (1865‱934), her husband.

This exhibition will focus on the fastest growing area of the museum’s collection, which is Modern and contemporary art, including paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture by such artists as Joseph Beuys (1921‱986), Robert Cottingham (b 1935), Sam Gilliam (b 1933), Adolph Gottlieb (1903‱974), Philip Guston (1913‱980), Keith Haring (1958‱991), Dame Barbara Hepworth (1903‱975), Sol LeWitt (1928′007), Diego Rivera (1886‱957) and David Smith (1906‱965).

Another component of the museum’s golden anniversary celebration is an exhibition of works by Dorothy Dehner (1901‱994) from the permanent collection. Titled “Dorothy Dehner at The Hyde” and presented in Hoopes Gallery, it will include prints, drawings, watercolors and a bronze sculpture by this important American Modernist. Dehner studied in New York City at the Art Students League and the leading printmaking studio, Atelier 17. The Glens Falls region was once home to the artist who lived in Bolton Landing, N.Y., from 1940 to 1950.

The Hyde has a long history of exhibiting and collecting the work of Dehner, presenting a solo exhibition of her works in 1967 and hosting a major retrospective in 1993. Many of the works featured in this special exhibition are recent gifts to the museum from the artist’s estate.
