Paintings and drawings, including recent works, by Philip Pearlstein, considered one of the nation’s leading figurative artists, are on view in the Chauncey Stillman Gallery of Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts through November 24.
Pearlstein has long been considered a leading figure in the contemporary Realist school. His works are held in more than 60 museum collections throughout the United States.
Pearlstein, who received his BFA degree from Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh and his MA degree from the New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts, was for many years a professor of fine art at Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, N.Y., where he remains distinguished professor emeritus. From 2003 to 2006, Pearlstein was president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York.
He has had more than 130 solo exhibitions and nearly 300 group exhibitions. He has received a number of awards, including the National Council of Arts Administrators’ Visual Artist Award; the Benjamin West Clinedinst Memorial Medal, the Artists Fellowship, Inc, New York City; and holds honorary doctorate degrees from Brooklyn College, N.Y.; Center for Creative Studies and the College of Art & Design, Detroit; the New York Academy of Arts, New York City; Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, Old Lyme.; and Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh.
