PITTSFIELD, MASS. — Fontaine Auction Gallery’s February 28 cataloged antiques auction really lit up when several Tiffany lamps crossed the block, but the star lot was the Tiffany Studios Moorish-style hall lantern with a gold and opaque glass geometric fish scale body and a 12-point feathered crown that was estimated at $20/30,000. It soared over estimate and attained $133,100.
Having a tapered cylindrical form and done in a fiery amber, the lantern was described as in original gilt finish. It had a domical top and lower door with a border of 25 amber jeweled cabochons.
Other Tiffany lots performing well in the sale included a Tiffany Studios Turtleback hanging hall lantern in rectangular form with pyramidal top that double its high estimate to bring $30,250 and a 24-inch Tiffany Studios Parasol table lamp that fetched $48,400.
A complete report on the sale will appear in a future edition.
