The Illinois State Museum Explores ‘The Land around Us’
CHICAGO, ILL. – Through September 15 the Illinois Art Gallery presents the exhibit “The Land Around Us: Landscape from the Collection of the Illinois State Museum,” featuring 47 works from painters, printmakers, and photographers.
“The Land Around Us” captures the many moods of landscapes, from the pristine to those forever changed by human hands. The works range in date from 1885 to the 1990s.
Whether it is a city attuned to neighborhood parks and forests of skyscrapers, a suburb with manicured lawns and graceful gardens, or a fertile farmland and rural community, diverse environments reverberate with never-ending cycles of birth, life, decay, and renewal.
The works shown present the vastness of land as well as its small details. The artists re-introduce our surroundings, reminding us that land is eternal and finding our individual sense of place in it is essential.
A second exhibit features work newly acquired for the permanent collection of the Illinois State Museum in Springfield. The museum’s fine art collection of prints, drawings, paintings, photographs, mixed-media work, and sculpture represents some of the best examples of Illinois art.
