Splendid cars and marine objects established record prices at Bonhams & Butterfields annual sale, April 30 and May 1, here where a scrimshawed whale’s tooth by Edward Burdett sold for an astounding $182,250. The 1828 tooth depicted the English whaler Daniel IV afire and the whaler Elizabeth in the background. The price is a record for scrimshaw at auction. A spectacular motorcar, a lustrous silver Tucker 48, one of 51 built and 47 that survive, stole the show on Saturday when it sold for $461,500. A complete report of the sale will appear in a future edition. -FMM
