PHILADELPHIA — A mahogany sideboard table that descended in the Pemberton, Morris and Lloyd families of Philadelphia and was attributed by tradition to Thomas Affleck stretched its $40/60,000 estimate and sold for $163,800 to a young private collector living outside of Philadelphia when it was offered at Freeman’s American furniture, folk and decorative arts sale on May 3. Lynda Cain qualified it as a “very rare” form in “amazing condition” with “spectacular provenance,” so it is perhaps unsurprising that the piece exceeded expectations. The sale of 157 lots was about 87 percent sold by lot and realized a total of $1.12 million against a low estimate of $690,000.
