A large quantity of books from the library of Harvard philosopher William Ernest Hocking (1873‱966) were stolen from the private library of a local estate during the weekend of February 16‱8.
Valued at more than $65,000, the missing books include a large amount of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century scholarly material in the areas of philosophy, religion and international law, as well as valuable Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century philosophy.
The scholarly material includes Nineteenth Century editions of Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, Epictetus, Cicero and others, plus works on classical philosophy by Zeller, Lodge, Inge and others.
