Adaline Bradford Embroidered Picture - Price Upon Request
STEPHEN & CAROL HUBER, Old Saybrook, Conn. — Adaline Bradford, at age 17, worked this charming silk embroidered picture while attending the Charlestown Academy in Charlestown, Mass., under the instruction of Miss Hannah Spofford. It is silk and watercolor on silk; 26¾ by 28 inches framed. The original glass is inscribed: Wrought by Adaline Bradford. Aged 17 years 1813. The scene depicts a shy young girl holding a small object between her fingers, being coaxed to offer it to the young man who is holding a sprig of flowers. The young girl got over her bashfulness and in her late teens moved west with “Buddy” and became a dancehall queen. Adaline (circa 1796–1846) was the middle child and only girl of the five children born to Isaac Bradford and Hannah Bayles Trask. Although her parents were both from the Boston area they settled in North Yarmouth, Maine. Her father grew up in Duxbury and is a direct decent of Gov. Bradford of Mayflower fame. Adaline in her late teens, was sent to the Charlestown Academy which is in the environs of Boston for continued education. www.antiquesamplers.com.
