Mary Ann M. Weston, Charleston, S.C., dated 1813. This rare southern sampler worked by Mary Ann at the age of nine has multiple intricately stitched alphabets, the Lord’s Prayer, Apostles’ Creed and various animals and other motifs. Mary Ann Mazyck Weston was the second oldest of 11 children born to Dr Paul Weston and Antonia Bentley. She was born July 1, 1805 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and as an infant moved with her parents and her older sister to Charleston, S.C., where all her other siblings were born. Her grandfather Plowden Weston, who owned Laurel Hill Plantation, made a great fortune that he left to Mary’s father and his other son. An extensive family genealogy and provenance accompanies the sampler. It measures 16½ by 8½ and is silk on linen.
