Artichoke by Basil Besler- Price Upon Request
Basil Besler "Artichoke" Eichstatt c. 1618. It is a wonder that this original engraving, so streamlined and graphic, so contemporary in feel, is almost 400 years old! From the landmark work by Basil Besler (1561-1629) whose large scale engravings were the earliest pictorial record of flowers from a single garden. Besler attempted to draw and engrave every shrub and flowering plant known at the time, including those new plants brought to Europe from the New World, such as corn, tomatoes and sunflowers. Today this engraving is prized for its size, scarcity and bold execution. Besler's artichoke is one of the most desirable plates and we are fortunate indeed to offer this engraving for sale.
