SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. – Gallery Materia is showing original furniture designs by Wendell Castle through October 31.
With his designs in all the major private collections and museums, Castle’s reputation is assured and he takes pleasure now in using exotic woods, laminates, metals and paints with unexpected juxtaposition.
Castle has been known to put humorous titles such as “You’re In the Money Now” or “Hold That Though” on his signature designs, which have soared in value to as much as $100,000. Gallery Materia has works ranging from $12,000 to $30,000, including a 1997 table called “Ahead of the Game,” another titled “Patience,” and a third design in aluminum named “White Lady.”
While Castle’s designs always generate applause for their craftsmanship and fine form, collectors sometimes are surprised that his largely organic and highly textural pieces can also deliver surprising comfort. His “Chair” has a bulbous seat back and cushion, and curvaceous legs forming high comfortable arms.
Complementing the Wendell Castle exhibition will be the newest works by Canadian ceramic artist, Steve Heinemann, and a collection of works by Tennessee wood turner and carver John Jordan.
Gallery Materia is at 4222 North Marshall Way. Telephone, 480-949-1262.
