PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — In his fifth-ever auction, Derin Bray of Bray & Co amassed more than 250 lots for an inaugural sale titled Tattoo, Circus, Sideshow & Curiosities, which took place on July 13. One of the highest results of the day was a hand-painted sheet of tattoo flash by Jesse Frederick Barber (1879-1970), a pioneering tattoo artist and supplier who worked primarily in Cincinnati and Detroit. Featuring designs for the US Navy and other themes, it came from the collection of Flo & Don Makofske, the founders of the National Tattoo Association, and sold for $7,995, including premium, to a private collector. A future issue will feature more highlights from this sale.
