“Fishing in the Everglades” by German American artist Hermann Herzog blasted its way to $226,000 at Skinner’s September 15 sale. The price appears to be a record.
Another Florida picture, the 1890 “The Plaza Basin, St. Augustine Florida” by Boston artist Frank Henry Shapleigh, brought $160,000 against the estimated $7/9,000. The picture came from an area collection and went to a collector of Florida paintings. It, too, seems to be a record.
Speaking by telephone after the sale Colleene Fesko, director of Skinner’s paintings department, said mildly, “Florida is hot!”
A complete review of the September 15 auction will appear in a future issue. All prices reported reflect the buyer’s premium of 17 ½ percent of the price up to $80,000 and 10 percent thereafter. For information, 978-779-6241 or www.skinnerinc.com.
