PHILADELPHIA, PENN. – A rare 1807 Washington, D.C., map embroidery by 14-year-old Susanna Wilkinson Atkinson of Alexandria, Va., quadrupled high estimate to sell for $112,500 including premium at Freeman’s April 19 sale of American furniture, folk and decorative arts. Based on L’Enfant and Ellicott’s city plan, published in Philadelphia in 1792, the 21 by 35 1/2 inch embroidery with watercolor embellishments is said to be one of four known. Other examples are in the collections of Dumbarton House, Winterthur Museum and Colonial Williamsburg. The session featured property deaccessioned by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association.
