SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Collectors, pen connoisseurs and lovers of Japanese craftsmanship will have a rare opportunity this fall when Terri Peters & Associates Auction House presents an exclusive online sale featuring rare and limited-edition Namiki fountain pens from the private collection of Ronald Shaw, chairman emeritus of Pilot Pen Corporation of America.
The auction will take place October 4 online at the firm’s website. The catalog includes some of the most coveted Namiki fountain pens ever produced-many of them #001s in their limited-edition series-and all personally owned by Shaw, one of the most influential figures in the modern history of fine writing instruments.
Ronald Shaw’s rise in the writing instrument industry is the stuff of legend. Beginning his career as a salesman for Bic Pen in 1961, Shaw joined Pilot Pen in 1975 and rose to become president of the Japanese company’s American subsidiary in 1986. Over the next two decades, he led the company from $1 million to nearly $200 million in US sales before retiring in 2007. His strategic vision and deep appreciation for craftsmanship helped elevate Pilot-and especially its Namiki brand-to global prominence.
At the time of his appointment, Shaw was one of only six Americans ever to serve on the board of directors of a publicly held Japanese company. His deep ties to Japan’s oldest and largest pen maker, Pilot Corporation, gave him unique access to some of the most exclusive pens ever produced — many of which will now be available to the public for the first time.
In the world of luxury writing instruments, Namiki is a name whispered with reverence. More than just pens, Namiki pieces are functional works of art, handcrafted by master artisans using the ancient Japanese technique of maki-e-a method of decorating lacquerware with gold or silver dust that dates back more than 1,500 years.
Namiki fountain pens are meticulously hand-painted, with designs that often draw from Japanese mythology, landscapes and nature. Each piece is a unique creation, fusing timeless aesthetics with high-performance engineering. The nibs — often crafted from 18K gold — offer a writing experience that is both smooth and responsive, making Namiki a favorite among elite collectors and calligraphers alike.
Among the most notable pieces in Shaw’s collection are: King Cobra #001/700 Limited Edition; White Tiger #001/300 Limited Edition; The Shark #01/80 Limited Edition; The Seahorse #02/300 Limited Edition; The Owl #01/450 Limited Edition; Namiki Emperor Pavilion Medium; Pilot 75th, 70th, 65th and 85th Anniversary Commemoratives; Omas Israel 50th Jubilee in sterling silver; sterling Buddhist Scripture “Custom Kyomon” (Heart Sutra) fountain pen; and a variety of other retractable Namiki pens
Many of these pens are first in their series, and several have never before been offered at public auction. With pieces representing multiple decades and styles — including Emperor, Yukari Royale and vest-type models, the collection offers something for every serious collector.
The online-only auction will be hosted by Terri Peters & Associates Auctions, and accessible via TPAauctions.com. Full catalog listings, high-resolution photographs and provenance details will be available in advance of the sale. Virtual previews, phone bids and absentee bids are offered by calling directly.
