PLAINVILLE, CONN. — Recently discovered in a Connecticut home is a Pilgrim Century carved document box originating from Windsor, Conn., in the tradition of the Deacon John Moore Shop that will be offered on September 29, starting at 5:30 pm at Winter Associates. Similar boxes are referred to as the “Foliate Vine Group,” and this piece is notable for its painted red top and black base, intricately carved “oliated Vine design to front panel, bold scribe lines and distinct notched interior. The squared notch interior is particularly associated with Moore Shop Tradition boxes as described by Joshua Lane and Donald White in the 2003 Historic Deerfield Exhibition Catalog The Woodworkers of Windsor.
Two single-owner collections from Connecticut homes include Southern folk art pottery face jugs, many purchased from Slotkin Folk Art Auctions, numbering 53 signed pieces by well-known potters Lanier Meaders, Burlon Craig, Evan Brown, Billie & Cleater Meaders, Albert Hodge and others. Twentieth Century works based on early American traditions, the jugs feature grotesque expressions and features, bold “Tobacco Spit” glazes and shard teeth. Some sought-after examples to be offered will be double-faced or with elaborate designs in relief; they range in size from 3 to 20 inches in height. Another single-owner collection of more than 40 folk art glass whimsies displays the techniques and artistry of late Nineteenth Century glass-blowers with intricate ribbon decoration, bold colors and twisted handle designs. Known as “whimsies” for being created after the end of day and lacking any utilitarian purpose, they were often displayed on walls and over doorframes for good luck. Pieces offered include canes, parade staffs, hammers, gavels, hatchets, rolling pins and darning balls, the largest measuring more than 90 inches in length.
Fifty-plus lots of early American furniture and furnishings will cross the block, many with provenance of purchase from Jeffrey Tillou Antiques and other reputable dealers, and some de-accessioned from a New England institution. Furniture includes an Eighteenth Century swing-leg table with carved ball and claw feet, gateleg table, Windsor and ladderback chairs, Eighteenth Century dressing table, primitive benches, a Seventeenth Century English armchair and Eighteenth Century English joined mule chest and joint stools. Victorian to early Twentieth Century furniture includes a circa 1880 kidney-shaped oak desk, late Nineteenth Century American marble top center tables, Boston style circa 1900 mahogany bombe secretary and Herter-style chairs. Ten antique miniature, diminutive and child sized pieces include a two-drawer stand, two four-drawer chests, two blanket chests and Windsor chairs. Twentieth Century reproductions by D. R. Dimes include a set of 12 Windsor dining chairs and a rocking armchair. Native American and Colonial treenware bowls (one purchased from Scott Powers Antiques), a hand-carved wooden rattlesnake purchased from Slotkin, wood grain shovels, decoys, salt-glazed stoneware, Nantucket and other woven baskets, cast iron and pewter tools round out the Americana offerings.
Jewelry in 14K and 18K gold will be offered, many set with diamonds, rubies, pearls, etc., including a vintage 14K coral slide bracelet, ruby and diamond bracelets, two 18K necklaces with diamond drop pendants, rings, brooches, etc. A heavy lapis and 14K scarab design pendant necklace is a reproduction of the coronation scarab of the Pharaoh Tutankhamen, the pendant alone weighing an impressive 124 grams. Several impressive Southwest silver pieces inset with turquoise are attractive for their large stone size and elaborate silver designs, including a large squash blossom necklace, concho belt with eight medallions and bold oversized pendant by Roy Begay.
Other items of interest in this eclectic sale include an Andre Harvey “Daddy Long Legs” limited edition bronze sculpture measuring 8½ inches high; Twentieth Century lighting with Tiffany Studios standing counterbalance floor lamp and circa 1930s Polaroid desk lamps featured; New Kingdom-style Egyptian canopic jar with head of jackal, 17 inches high; silver flatware sets: Old Lace by Towle as well as Royal Danish and Prelude by International; Linda Nelson Stocks oils (4); Asian woodblock prints (33); Willard banjo clock; English ceramics; Oriental carpets, etc.
