EAST MORICHES, N.Y. — South Bay Auctions has announced The Curiosity Sale, a timed, online auction featuring more than 450 unique and uncommon lots for the eclectic collector. More than 300 offerings come from a single estate, the lifetime collection of a prolific Long Island dealer and collector. The auction will take place online beginning at 11 am on Saturday, August 23. Buyers can register and bid through the South Bay Auctions website or via Invaluable.
This diverse sale is brimming with the curious, the rare and the whimsical — guaranteeing surprises at every turn. Discover art, antiques, furniture and decorative objects across a wide array of collecting categories, including folk art, Op art, posters, caricatures, breweriana, automobilia, jewelry, silver, and toys. There’s also photographs, ephemera, Masonic and fraternal regalia, pulp novel illustrations, aviation memorabilia, decoys and more.
Highlights include a Rube Goldberg political cartoon captioned “Get Out and Vote!”; an erotic automaton match safe; a set of Sixteenth Century anatomy engravings; an Eighteenth Century French hand fan commemorating the first hydrogen balloon flight by Jacques Alexandre César Charles and the Robert brothers in Paris; a Tiffany & Company Aesthetic Movement pendant brooch; botanical illustrations; an 1835 Knights Templar badge from Salem, Mass., in the form of a witch; a group of carved Bakelite jewelry; an 1849 painting by Seth Cole, Jr, depicting a whaling bark off Cape Horn in Chile, with an inset painted map; a Precisionist painting titled “Brooklyn Landscape,” American School (Twentieth Century); a French woven silk jacquard after Jean Louis David’s “Napoleon Crossing the Alps”; and a set of photographic portraits of two Spanish vaudeville performers, framed along with their handprints.
