Summer is in full swing with evening activities ranging from discovering an ice cream shop to attending musical concerts. For book lovers, no finer summertime activity can be found than by enjoying these pastimes and wandering into a used bookstore or even better finishing that cone at a book auction. From fiction to history to ephemera and much more, July promises to please the appetite of our auction attendees.
Under the heading fiction, we offer the following 1st editions: by Mark Twain (1880) “A Tramp Abroad;’ by Virginia Woolf (1920) “The Voyage Out;’ by Jack Kerouac (1962) “Big Sur;’ by John Updike (1994, signed) “Afterlife” and “Brazil’.’ To that list, add a 1st edition copy of Ernest Hemingway’s first book, “In Our Time;’ published by Boni & Liveright.
For those with an interest in history, consider by Thomas & Jablonski (1976) “Doolittle: A Biography;’ signed by Jimmy Doolittle or Eddie Rickenbacker (1943) “Seven Came Through: Rickenbacker’s Full Story;’ signed by Rickenbacker. Then there is a bodily inscribed 1st edition copy of “Skyways;’ by General William (Billy) Mitchell. Not yet smitten? How about O’Callaghan’s (1870) “History of the Irish Brigades in the Service of France from the
Revolution in Great Britain and Ireland under James II” bound in two custom leather volumes or a signed copy of Fellowes (1934) “First Over Everest: The Houston – Mount Everest Expedition of 1933?”
For those with an interest in ephemera these items should attract interest Colonial American currency from New York and Pennsylvania, a large framed circa 1900 photograph of New York Harbor with the Superliner Kaiser Wihelm der Grosse in the foreground and a customs statement dated 1833 for the Stonington CT vessel ‘Ruben Hancox’ which was later sunk at Bartlett Reef in 1891 by the Coast Guard with a Cargo Ins. document from the Hartford Marine Ins. Co for the ‘Elisa’ dated 1805 then leaving Hartford, CT for Norfolk, V A .. And then there is all 14 beautifully printed issues of “Gazette ou Vieux Paris;’ to accompany the 1900 Paris World’s Fair.
Like a good murder story then try Logan’s (1931) “Great Murder Mysteries;’ or the paranormal in which Mermet’s (1959) “Principles and Practice of Radiesthesia;’ is a must read.
