ASTORIA, N.Y. — Auctions at Showplace will present its May 15 estate auction, showcasing a collection of premium property from New York City metropolitan area estates and collections. The sale features work by artists, including Dale Chihuly, Robert Rauschenberg, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Olivia Sterling, Laura Berger, Philip Evergood, William Eggleston, Seonna Hong, Paul Cadmus, Christian Thee, Arnold Friedman, Richard Hambleton, Ambrogio Pozzi, Floriano Bodini, Ross Bleckner and Philip Edward Mullen. Other highlights include a wide array of bronze sculptures; Midcentury Modern furniture designed by William Katavalos, Ross Littel and Douglas Kelley, Eero Saarinen and Hans Ullrich Bitsch; antiques; jewelry; art glass; ceramics; silver; lighting; prints; paintings; and much more.
Collectors of Post-Impressionist art will be particularly drawn to a collection of rare lithographs by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec capturing the energy of cabarets, performers and everyday scenes through the artist’s distinctive style. The collection includes the iconic “Ambassadeurs: Aristide Bruant dans son Cabaret” along with “Confetti,” “Divan Japonais,” “La Revue Blanche,” “Le Missionaire,” “May Milton,” “La Debauche,” “May Belfort,” “Repertoire de Jane…” and “La Reine de Joie.” WPA collectors will find a collection of Depression-era paintings by postman-turned-painter Arnold Aaron Friedman with provenance from Hirschl & Adler Galleries and Sotheby’s. The sale continues with glass and lithographs by Dale Chihuly and a drawing of an art class by Paul Cadmus
Furnishings on offer include a set of Le Corbusier for Cassina sofas from the Park Avenue estate of designer Neal Small. The luxurious mohair upholstery adds a layer of sophistication to their clean lines and architectural form. Highlights continue with a set of six William Katavalos, Ross Littel, and Douglas Kelley for Laverne International “T” Chairs from the 1950s and a set of four Hans Ullrich Bitsch Series 8600 dining chairs from the estate of Sherle Wagner.
Decorative arts highlights include a collection of Chinese export famille rose porcelain from the Qianlong period, a grouping of Chinese jade and a Royal Copenhagen porcelain Flora Danica ice bucket.
Estate jewelry and watches complete the sale.
