NEW YORK CITY— The American Art Fair celebrates its 18th year from May 10-13 at the elegant, landmarked Bohemian National Hall. Inaugurated in 2008 to promote historic American art, the event features more than 400 paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture exhibited by 17 premier specialists.
Continuing as exhibitors are Adelson Galleries, Avery Galleries, Bernard Goldberg Fine Arts, D. Wigmore Fine Art, David A. Schorsch-Eileen M. Smiles, Debra Force Fine Art, Graham Shay 1857, Forum Gallery, Hawthorne Fine Art, Hirschl & Adler Galleries, Questroyal Fine Art, Schwarz Gallery and Thomas Colville Fine Art. Vose Galleries is returning after a pause; first time exhibitors are ACA Galleries, Hollis Taggart and Robert Simon Fine Art.
Thomas Colville, the fair’s founder, noted, “The combined expertise of our exhibitors — who include America’s longest-established galleries — is unmatched. Their knowledge and experience draw curators and collectors to Manhattan in May to celebrate American art.”
Visitors to the fair — unique as admission is free — can survey the “canon” of American art from folk art and the Hudson River School through the Modernist movements by well-known as well as newly discovered artists. Featured are works by Sanford Robinson Gifford, Winfred Rembert, Chaim Gross, John LaFarge, Eastman Johnson, Joan Mitchell, Emil Bisttram, John Singer Sargent, Mabel Woodward, Andrew Wyeth, Romare Bearden, John Whorf, Joseph Stella, Elie Nadelman, William Zorach, Marsden Hartley, Albert Bierstadt, Irene Monat Stern, William Merritt Chase, Charles Burchfield, Max Weber, Charles Demuth, Rockwell Kent, Lilla Cabot Perry, Thomas Hart Benton, John Marin, Adelaide Cole Chase, Francis Augustus Silva, Stuart Davis and Reginald Marsh. This year, the fair embraces the Americas: Old Masters dealer Robert Simon Fine Art will show Eighteenth Century Peruvian works including a “Virgin of Loreto,” “Holy Family” and “Young Christ Pricked by a Thorn” as well as a 1790s portrait of George Washington by Charles Peale Polk. One of the “newest” works in the fair will be shown by America’s oldest gallery: Wolf Kahn’s 2004 “Blue Runs Through It” is at Vose Galleries, established in 1841.
The firm of David A. Schorsch-Eileen M. Smiles returns to the fair for a third year, bringing a circa 1880 polychrome candlestick with carved horses, a circa 1830 portrait, “Young Girl in Brown” and a signed and dated watercolor “Barn in Cross Sectional View” by Charlotte Hoff, in a period painted frame, 1846.
Quality is a hallmark of the fair, whether new to market works from a private collection, high quality works on paper by American masters or new discoveries. Works on paper by American masters will be exhibited by Adelson Galleries, Debra Force Fine Art, Forum Gallery, Hirschl & Adler Galleries, Hollis Taggart and Questroyal Fine Art, among others. New discoveries include a trove at Hawthorne Fine Art, which will unveil at this year’s fair six works by Julie Hart Beers (1835-1913) recently found in the basement of a descendant’s family home. The American Art Fair’s 2025 catalog may be viewed on the fair’s website.
