ALAMEDA, CALIF. — Michaan’s Gallery Auction on Friday, April 18, presents a wide variety of well-known haute couture, including Gianni Versace and House of Worth. Michaan’s also has a collection of Civil War memorabilia spanning both the collectible and stamps and coins departments.
The furniture and decorative arts department have a consignment of vintage silk couture. One example is from Jacques Fath, considered one of the top three dominant influencers on postwar haute couture. For the history buffs, the department is also offering a rare Sixteenth Century Sebastian Munster German map of the Americas and a Civil War diary of Lieutenant Martin L. Buckwalter of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
The Asian art department is also benefitting from the extensive couture consignment. They will be offering a Chinese black silk embroidered vest and a Chinese silk and fur embroidered opera cape and hat. They will also be offering a Japanese katana sword, Echizen-no-kami Nobuyoshi, along with a Laotian bronze rain drum.
The fine art department is featuring a whimsical glass sculpture titled “King of Hearts,” created by Lino Tagiapietra. Tagiapietra was born in Venice, Italy, but has worked extensively in the United States and admirers can see his influences throughout China, Japan and Australia. In 1997, he was bestowed with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Glass Art Society and the Bavarian State Gold Medal for Crafts. Also offered will be a winter river scene, oil on canvas, by George Ames Aldrich (American, 1872-1941); another oil on canvas of note is “Portrait of a Woman” by Robert Brackman (American, 1898-1980).
The stamp and coin department is highlighting a Civil War-era binder that includes Confederate stamps, covers and letters from Lieutenant General James Longstreet, nicknamed “Old War Horse” and Robert E. Lee’s second in command. Others, include but are not limited to Generals Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman and Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
The jewelry and timepieces department is offering some very unique brooches. A sapphire 18K yellow gold brooch and a jade 18K yellow gold dragon brooch will cross the block There is also a multicolored diamond studded butterfly brooch.
Previews are Sunday, April 13 from 10 am to 5 pm; Thursday, April 17 from noon to 5 pm; and Friday, April 18 from 9am to the end of auction.
