There is a saying that April showers bring May flowers but here at Connecticut River Book Auction it brings a deluge of interesting books.
For collectors who like signed works consider the following: T.S. Eliot (1929) “Dante,” by A.A. Milne (1929) “The Secret and Other Stories;” by Clare Leighton (1973) “Where Land Meets Sea,,” and by Arthur Rackham (1917) “”Little Brother & Little Sister and Other Tales by the Brothers Grimm.” To this add signed volumes by Whoopi Goldberg, Pavarotti, Archie Moore, and Hubert H. Humphrey.”
This auction is rich in history including: Zephaniah Swift (1796) “The Laws of the United States of America,” by Marshall (circa 1832) “Atlas to Marshall’s Life of Washington,” by Clark (1867) “Seven Years of a Sailor’s Life,” and by Custer (1885) “Boots and Saddles: Or Life in Dakota with General Custer.”
Two sets that might interest readers are the Pickering edition in two volumes of Isaak Walton (1836) “The Complete Angler or the Contemplative Man’s Recreation,” and a lovely 1892 printing of Jane Austin’s works in ten volumes.
Every auction offers ephemera lovers several lots of interesting odds and ends. This auction has a program for the “Diamond Jubilee Birthday Salute to Mamie David Eisenhower,” signed by Ray Bolger, Lawrence Welk, Ethel Merman and Red Skelton. There is also an undated Thackery signed note inviting “Creyke” to dine with him and an untitled Sam Gilliam (noted African American Artist) framed and matted work.

And what would our auction be without murder and mayhem? In the category of murder, there is Ward & Lock (1856) “Illustrated Life and Career of William Palmer of Rugeley… Racing Man and Poisoner,” by Yerrinton (1862) “Report of the Case of Geo. C. Hersey indicted for the Murder of Betsy Francis Tirrell,” and a scarce copy of Greenwood (1874) “The Wilds of London.” For those getting an early start on Halloween, consider by O’Donnell (1920) “More Haunted Houses of London,” (1952) Ghosts with a Purpose,” and (1956) “Haunted Britain.”
