ALAMEDA, CALIF. —Michaan’s Gallery Auction on Friday, March 14, presents works of art from notable artists in addition to examples from the jewelry and Asian art departments. The auction is led by the fine arts department, which will offer an oil painting by Nicola Simbari and a lithograph from Sam Francis. Also in the sale is a collection of jade and hardstone carvings in the Asian art section, and the jewelry department never fails to shine with diamonds, 24K yellow gold and jadeite jade.
The Asian art department has an exciting lineup this month, starting off with four paintings and calligraphy scrolls ($500/800) by Zhang Yiqiqn, all signed and stamped by the artist. Another interesting piece is a Tibetan silver mounted Kapala skull ($2/3,000).
In Vajrayana Buddhism, the upper cranium of the human skull (kapala) is used in tantric alchemy in which the impurities of mundane passions — namely, the three poisons of ignorance, greed and delusion — are exorcised and thereby transformed into forces of good, wisdom and compassion. In the ceramic section there is a collection of Chinese teapots ($500/800).
The fine arts department has a bronze sculpture by Kent Ullberg, “Water’s Edge” ($800-$1,200). Ullberg has been honored with many prestigious awards, including a full Accademian (NA) making him the first wildlife artist since John James Audubon to receive such an award. This piece is from the Glenshaw estate. The department also has a California landscape by William Howell Bull ($500/700) and an oil on canvas, “Gargano” ($3/5,000) painted by the Italian artist Nicola Simbari.
The furniture and decorative art department continues to have an impressive decorative arts section, led by blown glass artist Sonja Blomdahl. She is known for her incalmo technique, joining two or more blown glass cylinders together to create a sculpture or vessel.
The vase being offered has a blue mouth with a bulbous red body ($1,8/2,500). Also on the block are two Tiffany pieces. The first, a classic gold floriform vase ($600-$1,000) and the second is a unique Tiffany Studios eight-piece Abalone pattern desk set ($800-$1,200).
The jewelry department this month features a whimsical Italian Moba enamel, diamond, ruby, 18K yellow gold Puffer Fish brooch ($600/800) and a diamond 14K yellow gold bracelet ($3/5,000).
