BEACHWOOD, OHIO — Neue Auctions’ March 14 online-only auction features long treasured objects from two prominent local estates, combining American antiques with boatloads of decorative arts unearthed from a four-generation Cleveland family estate.
The Hudson, Ohio, saltbox home was lovingly filled in period style with painted American furniture, much of it purchased at Garth’s Auctions over many years. Of note is a blue painted pine mule chest, as well as an Eighteenth Century William and Mary pine two-drawer chest, a red stained pine mule chest and a green painted step back cupboard. There are numerous examples of ladder back splint seat chairs, small tables, work tables and tavern tables, many with painted finishes. American decorative arts include painted pantry boxes, woven jacquard coverlets, samplers, a selection of yellowware, splint baskets and stoneware crocks.
Dovetailing neatly with the American offerings is a collection of decorative arts unearthed from a prominent family storage trove, which includes many examples of Georgian and early Nineteenth Century glass in the form of decanters, vases, Steuben glass and multiple examples in colored glass — amber, cobalt and green.
A surprising appearance is a pair “Aufsatz” centerpiece vessels designed by Josef Hoffman for the Wiener Werkstätte, rare, although with some condition issues.
Also from this collection are many opportunities in Chinese blue and white Canton ware, Chinese export porcelain, early tin glazed faience, copper cookware and large groupings of French Biot bubble glass.
Two pairs of Chinese glazed porcelain planters are notable, one in blue and white decorated with a meandering pattern and boar’s heads and another pair in a simulated oil spot glaze on fitted stands.
Very stylish is a pair of green painted Gothic-style twin beds from a Hunting Valley, Ohio, estate. There is also a French Empire period gilt bronze mantel clock signed “Gerard á Paris,” cast and polished in gilt bronze. A set of four period French Directoire armchairs with painted finish are a departure from the American furniture offerings.
Rounding out the sale are paintings, prints, an Italian marble bust of a medieval beauty on pedestal, an Elkington bronze of a Royal Navy seaman and Modernist sculptures by Pál Kepenyes.
