KINGSTON, N.Y. — On Friday, April 25 at 4 pm JMW Auction Service will sell 500 fresh-to-the-market lots, highlighted by the William “Bill” Berry collection of canine artwork and collectibles, with almost all being Scottish terriers.
Bill was known as the “Godfather of Scottish terriers,” respected worldwide for his expertise, collecting and operating Motherwell Breeders, in Parsippany, N.J. He sold President George and Laura Bush their two Scotties and personally delivered them to the White House; signed photos of them will be in the auction.
Some of the most prominent canine artists of the time are represented, including William Medcalf, Arthur Wardle, (2) Maud Earl, Marguerite Kirmse, Morgan Dennis, (3) Gustav Muss Arnolt, Marion Needham Krupp, Levon West, Edwin Megargee, Dorothy Hardcastle, Gladys Emerson Cook, Leon Danchin, Reuben Ward Binks, Henry Wilkonson, Joan Engle, Ruth Beardmore, Curt Meyer Eberhardt, Diana Thorne, Helene Friedman, Jean Ramsay, Lisa Balsie, Helen Wilson Sherman and others.
There are Scottish Terrier bronzes by Louise Hobbs Allen, Edwin E. Codman, Ethel Ehrmann Loewy and Edith Barretto Parsons. Other Scottish terrier smalls will include Hermès, Christolfe, a Tiffany & Company sterling trophy and more.
The sale will feature still more paintings from the Hudson, N.Y., estate of Albert Burnette Roberts, as well as other paintings from estates throughout the Hudson Valley. Also, a collection of icons, sterling silver, pottery, glassware, bronzes is highlighted by a nude female fountain by Harriet Whitney Frishmuth. Civil War weapons, a collection of Civil War autographs of prominent officers, politicians, as well as manuscripts and documents from a Scranton, Penn., estate will cross the block.
A collection of early books and ephemera comes from a Hyde Park estate. Stained glass windows, a pair of bronze ship binnacle bases, a selection of antique and modern furniture highlighted by a heavily carved Italian dining room set, textiles, vintage sporting goods, a collection of bisque head and composition dolls, stamps, coins, decorative accessories, old toys, clocks, Native American artifacts, military collectibles, a smoking pipe collection, pinback buttons, a barber shop pinback button collection, illustration artwork, decorated stoneware from a stone house in Stone Ridge, N.Y., musical instruments and more are in the sale.
