PLAINVILLE, CONN. – On January 20, Winter Associates’ auction will start at 5:30 pm. A consignor’s recent discovery, a 1612 King James Bible in a used bookshop, will accompany a handsome group of ecclesiastical vestments from the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. They have been sent to auction to benefit the Slater Memorial Museum’s acquisition fund. The rare bible is an example of the first quarto New Testament of King James version; no other copies are listed as having sold at auction since 1985, and there are only three other auction records in the whole of the Twentieth Century. The garments are embroidered with silver and gilt threads, and many are framed.
American items offered in this auction have also been tucked away, some for 30 years in a Bristol warehouse. Most notable of this group is a circa 1800 Salem, Mass., Sheraton sofa illustrated in American Antiques from the Israel Sack Collection. Several other Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century New England pieces from the warehouse include Federal chests of drawers, a blanket chest, corner chair, Pembroke and tavern tables and more. From other sources, a carved classical revival table with white marble top and an early portrait of a young girl holding a doll in the manner of Joseph Goodhue Chandler (1813-1884).
A Confederate Bowie knife that was captured features carving on the handle by its captor, Carlos Buck, describing that it was taken during the Roanoke Island Battle of February 19, 1862. Other miliaria to be offered include a Collinsville plantation owners’ sword, a naïve oil painting depicting West Point, four prints after William Henry Meyers featuring the Mexican-American War, a World War I Columbia Calls poster and World War II aeronautical items kept as souvenirs, including flying caps and goggles, a gun camera and more.
The January 20 sale will also feature Nineteenth and Twentieth Century paintings and prints, traditional and contemporary. Notable traditional works include a large, luminous winter landscape by Harry Russell Ballinger presented in a Newcomb Macklin frame, a landscape by Dennis Sheehan, a floral still life by John C. Traynor, landscapes by Louis Aston Knight, George L. Nelson, Douglas Smith, Alex Poplaski and others.
There is a selection of works by Connecticut artists, including oil paintings, such as reclining cows by William Henry Howe, a large James Goodwin McManus landscape (with accompanying photos of its display in the Old Timers Club in Hartford) and Linda Nelson Stocks paintings, most featuring New England locations. Prints by Connecticut and New England artists will include those by Winfield Scott Clime, Philip Kappel, Yngve Edward Soderberg, Luigi Lucioni, Robert Nisbit and others. A silver gelatin photograph by marine photographer Morris Rosenfeld, “The Shamrock,” depicts the iconic America’s Cup challenger under full sail and is signed and embossed in lower right corner by the artist. A Renoir print and several oils on canvas, including Continental landscapes by Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriel and William Didier-Pouget, will also be offered.
A varied selection of English and Continental decorative arts include micromosaics, Murano glass, miniature portraits and bronze figures, as well as porcelain from Sevres, Flight Barr & Barr, Worcester, Meissen, Saint Clement and others. Other notable items include hollowware by Steuben; an assortment of Southwest silver jewelry, including squash blossom necklaces, cuff bracelets and rings set with turquoise and other stones; English and American silver flatware and serving pieces including by Tiffany & Co.; Asian carved sculptures, woodblock prints and embroideries; and Oriental carpets and rugs.
A single-owner toy collection of trucks, many by iconic maker Wyandotte, as well as Steelcraft and Hubley will also be featured.
Previews are Friday, January 17, from noon to 4 pm; Sunday, January 19, from 2-4 pm; and on Monday, January 20, from noon to 5 pm. Previewers are welcome at other times by appointment.
